The second GTG of RedBar CH took place last weekend in Geneva and was focused on the Speedmaster as the two writers (who i want to thank for their participation) of the “Bible” of Speedies, Moonwatch Only, were with us.

Apart from a great selection of Omegas, we had some incredible watches on the table, even few special pieces that you don’t see so often, unless you live in Switzerland...

The king of the night surely was the Krayon Everywhere, brought to the gathering by Rémi Maillat (founder of the brand), a young watchmaker who invented, engineered and built this work of art that can tell the time of sunset and sunrise all over the world.

If you know what an “Equation du temps” (equation of time) is, you’d probably raise a hand just to tell me that sunset and sunrise aren’t something new, but Rémi knows it and that’s why he decided to reinvent the complication creating an automatic movement with 72 hours power reserve that can be adjusted to almost every latitude and longitude on earth, while all the previous watches could only work in the specific areas they were built for.

The wrist test was super cool: the case is a bit big for me (42mm) while the dial is really tasteful and with a great color balance. The whole watch shows a true harmony between history and innovation, and a huge dedication to details.

The movement side is particular: there is a great use of the contrast between steel bridges and gold wheels, a very well made anglage and no Côtes de Genève: a great way to make the caliber look solid and pretty different to the majority of high end timepieces.

While at first sight the mechanism might look too simple, many other details can be spotted, such as the incredible radial decoration of bridges, centered in the rotor, representing sun-rays and geographical maps.

Krayon is doing what i call watchmaking: innovating while reamining faithful of the tradition and heritage. They are creating something new with the same strong quality of the past, and they are doing it with taste!

Meeting Rémi was an experience: he taught me many new thing about watches and watchmaking but most of all he made me believe in the future of this art, no longer alive in mass brands and culture...

He is a humble guy despite his success, he is a dreamer, and i really think that we need more people like him in the industry and many more independent watchmakers that can renew the horological world!!!

I wish him all the best and hope to read his name in the future as “the new Breguet”.
